Engine Valve Basics to Help Improve Performance

In recent weeks, we’ve talked about several key components of industrial engines, namely the crankshaft and camshaft. As you’ll recall, the crankshaft and the camshaft are connected by a timing belt, and it is the job of both components to convert rotary motion to linear motion and vice versa, as well as to assist the other components in helping the engine develop power.

This week’s tip focuses on the one of these “other” components – the valves.

Shining a light on varnish in turbine oil

The market for turbines shows no signs of slowing down, especially in Asia Pacific where demand is driven by the region’s rising economic growth and the growing need to replace coal-fired plants.

Consulting firm Technavio said that Asia Pacific “is expected to become the largest revenue-contributing region in the [turbine] market by 2020 and projected to occupy more than 49 percent of the overall market share,” according to Lubes’n’Greases.

So it’s a big business keeping these turbines well-oiled, especially when the occurrence of varnish in turbine oil is a perennial problem – as many of us can attest to.
